LiV Warfield’s Unexpected New Release

Genre can be a tricky discussion when releasing an album. When an artist creates a work that pulls from a wide variety of influences, their label is left with a conundrum: to which crowd should they direct their efforts? The discussion is not merely an academic or financial one: bad marketing to an unreceptive audience has stymied or stifled the career of more than one musician sitting at the brink of greatness, and the unfortunate reality is that “artistic integrity” won’t cover the gas bill at the end of the month. For LiV Warfield, this means that a decision had to be made to concentrate her marketing on the R&B scene; however, her newest release has a much broader appeal than the typical cookie cutter soul record.
